Viaje a Medellin / Trip Back to Medellin

We made it back to Medellin on Tuesday afternoon after 104 hours on buses!  We were very thankful to be able to take showers and sleep in real beds again!  Just a few updates and stories from our trip back to Medellin:

We were able to leave last Thursday at around 7 am for Chile as we had hoped, and we made it to the Chilean border without any signs of a protest or road block.  The luggage scanner was broken at the Chilean customs office, so they had to manually search all luggage coming through which meant they were pretty backed up.  It took four hours before we were able to get through, but we didn’t have any problems with immigration, so thank you for praying about that.  The scenery around the border was beautiful; it was a desert-like area with snow capped mountains and crystal blue lakes but only sparse vegetation.  There were also free range llamas dotting the countryside, which was cool.

On the way from Arequipa to Lima, we stopped for lunch in a little desert town, but when we tried to leave, the bus wouldn’t start!  The driver and a few others tried to fix it for an hour or so but were unable to.  The bus company had to send another bus from Arequipa to come get us.  By the time it arrived and we transferred all of the luggage, we had waited about four and a half hours.  We were all very thankful that the problem occurred in a town and not in the middle of the desert!  While we were waiting, we met a very nice couple from Spain who were in the middle of a full year of traveling around the world.  We ended up talking to them for several hours about their adventures in South America (having their check card number stolen twice to make fraudulent purchases, encountering police corruption when they tried to report it, crossing the Bolivia/Peru border illegally in a van to get around protest road blocks, their train canceled by a landslide on the way back from Machu Picchu, etc.).

Also, Giovanny and Joanna had left a suitcase in Guayaquil so they wouldn't have so much to carry around.  When we got there, they tried to get in touch with one of the church members, Gabriel,  to get it back, but we only had an hour before our next bus was supposed to leave!  Giovanny and Gabriel left to get it, but didn't make it back in time, and the bus driver wasn't willing to wait.  They made it back to the bus terminal but hadn't made it up to the bus yet when the driver decided to leave.  So the rest of us pulled out on the bus with plans for Giovanny and Gabriel to meet us along the bus's route.  When they didn't make the first meeting place in time, they talked to the bus driver and set up to meet at a toll booth outside of town.  Unfortunately, they weren't there when we got there, and the bus driver was irritated and not willing to wait any longer.  Unsure of what to do and not wanting to leave Giovanny behind, we all got off the bus and ended up in the dark on the edge of a highway outside of Guayaquil with all of our luggage.

We walked the short distance back to the toll booth where fortunately there were a couple of policemen (apparently that area was known for robbery - someone had been shot in the head in a recent robbery attempt!) who helped us out.  One let us borrow his phone to call Gabriel who had been flying along at over 80 mph with Giovanny trying to beat the bus to a nearby town.  He had texted the bus driver to tell us not to get off, but the driver never passed on the message to us.  Gabriel was disappointed that we had gotten off (he's a taxi driver and was enjoying the challenge of beating the bus), but agreed to meet us at the terminal again.  The rest of us managed to barter passage back to the terminal on a passing bus, and we were all back together 30 minutes later.  We found another bus to continue our journey an hour later, but we couldn't get the first bus company to refund any of our money.  It was a rather difficult night for all of us.

We also wanted to let you know that Giovanny and Joanna have decided not to continue the crusade with us.  There were some differences regarding YWAM leadership and decisions made as well as some general craziness on the trip, and they decided it would be best to return to Bogota and continue their ministry there.  We wish them all the best and ask that you all be praying that God will direct them and guide them as they seek to start careers as missionaries.  They were a great asset to our team - please pray for the rest of us as we continue the crusade without them.

¡Volvimos a Medellín el martes por la tarde después de 104 horas sobre autobuses! ¡Nosotros estamos muy agradecidos por poder tomar duchas y sueño en verdaderas camas otra vez! Solamente unas actualizaciones e historias de nuestro viaje atrás a Medellín:
Fuimos capaces de marcharnos el jueves pasado alrededor a las 7h 00 para Chile como nosotros habíamos esperado, y lo hicimos a la frontera chilena sin cualquier signo de una protesta o el bloque del camino. El escáner de equipaje fue roto en la oficina de aduana chilena, entonces ellos a mano tuvieron que buscar todo el equipaje siendo ellos bsatantes precavidos. Esto tomó cuatro horas antes de que nosotros fuéramos capaz de pasar, pero nosotros no teníamos ningún problema con la inmigración, agradecemos por orar sobre esto. El paisaje alrededor de la frontera era hermoso; esto era un área parecida a un desierto con la nieve montañas capsuladas y lagos azul cristal, pero vegetación sólo escasa. Había también muchas llamas llenando el campo, que era chulo.
¡En el camino de Arequipa a Lima, nos paramos para el almuerzo en una pequeña ciudad de desierto, pero cuándo tratamos de marcharnos, el autobús no encendia! El conductor y algunos otros trataron de fijarlo durante una hora , pero eran incapaces . La empresa de autobús tuvo que enviar otro autobús de Arequipa para venir a recogernos y llevarnos hasta lima. al pasar el tiempo esto llegó y transferimos todo el equipaje, nosotros habíamos esperado cuatro horas y media. ¡Nosotros éramos todo muy agradecidos que el problema ocurrió en una ciudad y no en medio del desierto! Mientras nosotros esperábamos, encontramos una pareja muy agradable de España quien estaba en medio de un año completo de viajes en el mundo entero. Terminamos por dirigirnos a ellos durante varias horas sobre sus aventuras en Sudamérica (teniendo su número de tarjeta bancari robado dos veces para hacer compras fraudulentas, encontrando corrupcion en la policía cuando ellos trataron de relatarlo, cruzando Bolivia/Perú linda ilegalmente en una furgoneta para ponerse alrededor de bloques de camino de protesta, su tren cancelado por un derrumbamiento sobre el camino atrás de Machu Picchu, etc.).
También, Giovanny y Joanna había dejado una maleta en Guayaquíl entonces ellos no tendrían tanto para llevar alrededor. ¡Cuándo nos pusimos allí, ellos trataron de ponerse en contacto con uno de los miembros de iglesia, Gabriel, que traeria la maleta, pero nosotros sólo teníamos una hora antes de que nuestro siguiente autobús, se marchara! Giovanny y Gabriel se marcharon para conseguir la maleta, pero no volvieron a tiempo, y el conductor del autobús no estaba dispuesto a esperar. nosotros en el autobús con planeando para que Giovanny y Gabriel nos encontraran a lo largo de la ruta del autobús, a las afueras de guayaquil. Ellos se dirigieron al conductor del autobús y establecieron un lugar para encontrarse en una cabina de peaje fuera de la ciudad. Lamentablemente, ellos no estaban allí cuando el autobus llego al peaje, y el conductor del autobús fue irritado y no dispuesto de esperar más. Inseguro de que hacer y el no deseo de dejar Giovanny detrás, nos bajamos de el autobús y terminamos en la oscuridad sobre el borde de una carretera fuera de Guayaquíl con todo nuestro equipaje.
¡Anduvimos la distancia corta atrás a la cabina de peaje dónde por suerte había un par de policías (al parecer que sabían sobre las zonas de robo - alguien había sido herido con un tiro en la cabeza en una tentativa de robo reciente!) quien nos echó una mano. Nos dejan tomar prestado su teléfono para llamar a Gabriel que había estado volando a lo largo en más de 80 millas por hora con Giovanny que trata de llegar al autobús en una ciudad cercana. Él habia enviado un mensaje al conductor del autobús para decirnos que no bajaramos, pero el conductor nunca nos pasó el mensaje. Gabriel estuvo decepcionado que nosotros nos habíamos bajado (él es un taxista y disfrutaba del desafío de lleagr al autobús), pero estuvo de acuerdo con encontrarnos en el terminal otra vez. El resto de nosotros logró cambiar el paso atrás al terminal sobre un autobús que pasaba, y nosotros estábamos juntos 30 minutos más tarde. Encontramos otro autobús para seguir nuestro viaje una hora más tarde, pero nosotros no podíamos conseguir la primera empresa de autobús para reembolsar cualquiera de nuestro dinero. Esto era una noche bastante difícil para todos nosotros.
　
También queremos dejarles saber que Giovanny y Joanna han decidido no seguir la cruzada con nosotros. Había algunas diferencias en cuanto al liderazgo de JUCUM (YWAM) y decisiones tomadas así como alguna locura general por el viaje, y ellos decidieron sería lo mejor volver a Bogotá y seguiría su ministerio allí. Deseamos a ellos todo lo mejor y pedimos que todos ustedes oren para que Dios los dirigirá a ellos en su busca de comenzar carreras como misioneros. Ellos eran un gran activo para nuestro equipo - por favor oren, por el resto de nosotros que seguimos la cruzada sin ellos.
