Thursday, May 5

The pastor met us at the bus terminal in Cusco after our bus pulled in at about 7 the next morning. He took us to his church where we stayed in a couple of loft-like rooms with bunk beds. Cusco is much cooler than Lima or Guayaquil, and the water is very cold!

The pastor took us out to breakfast in the central market. The church in Cusco graciously provided our lodging but wasn’t able to provide food for us, and we were short on money, so we bought food in the market to prepare ourselves for the week. Afterward we had some time to rest, cook, and explore the town a bit before going to bed.

Friday, May 6

Today we went to the nearby town of Occopata to visit a woman from the church. Lead by a Quechua woman from the church, we took off in a van with a few other passengers. About thirty minutes into the van ride, we ran into a road block – they had closed the road temporarily for construction, and we had to wait two and a half hours before we could continue! We took advantage of the break to take some pictures of some indigenous people and their homes.

Once we got to the town, it was about a 20 minute hike through the hills to reach the church member’s farm. She wasn’t home, but her husband invited us in and prepared us potatoes in a Peruvian-style underground oven. They were very good. We had a good time of prayer with him before heading back to Cusco.

Jueves, 5 de Mayo

El pastor nos recogió en el terminal en Cusco después de llegar a las 7 de la mañana. Él nos llevó a su iglesia donde hospedamos en un par de cuartos con camarotes en el tercer piso del edificio. En Cusco, hace más frío que en Lima o en Guayaquil, y el agua esta muy fría!

Él pastor nos llevó a un sitio en el mercado para desayunar. La iglesia en Cusco generosamente proveyó nuestro hospedaje, pero no podía proveer la alimentación también, y no teníamos mucho dinero, así que compramos comida en el mercado para preparar nuestras propias comidas. Después, descansamos un rato, hicimos la cena y la comimos, y tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer el pueblo un poquito antes de acostarnos.

Viernes, 6 de Mayo

Fuimos a Occopata, un pueblo cerca de Cusco, para visitar a una hermana de la iglesia. Dirigido por una mujer Quechua de la iglesia, nos fuimos en un minibús con varios otros pasajeros. Después de viajar por 30 minutes, llegamos a una parte de la carretera que estaba cerrado temporalmente para construcción. Tuvimos que esperar dos horas y media antes de poder continuar! Aprovechamos el paro para tomar algunas fotos de las indígenas allá.

Al llegar a Occopata, caminamos por un rato por las colinas para alcanzar la granja de la hermana. Ellá no estuvo, pero su esposo nos invitó a entrar y nos hizo papas en un horno casero subterráneo. Muy ricas! Charlamos con el hermano y oramos por él y su familia y finca antes de volver a Cusco.

Esta mujer fue abandonado por su esposo y vende flores y pide limosna para ganar la vivienda para sí mismo y sus tres hijos. La dimos un poquito de dinero y ella nos dejó tomar su foto.

This lady's husband left her, and now she sells flowers and begs to support herself and her three children. We gave her some money and she let us take her picture.
