Equipo Cruzada Sudamerica: Viaje a La Paz / Trip to La Paz

Our bus for La Paz was to leave at 10:30 that Sunday night, but when we arrived we were told that there was a miners strike in Puno (a city on the way to the border) and that the bus company had canceled our bus. Apparently the miners block the roads and may potentially damage property. We prayed about it and were able to find another bus that was still scheduled to leave. Trusting that God would take care of any problems, we took off and reached the Bolivian border without any signs of a strike (although most of us were asleep so maybe we just missed it!). The alternate bus was a little more expensive than our original one, but God provided and we didn’t have any trouble.

Monday, May 9

At the border Monday morning, Joanna and David (the U.S. citizens) had to get a visa which supposedly required a lot of paperwork and documentation. The officials were very friendly and didn’t seem to be worried about a lot of the requirements, so they got their visas by doing little more than paying the $135 fee

We enjoyed the beautiful scenery around Lake Titicaca and even had to get off the bus to cross a channel in boats while the bus crossed on a ferry! We made it to La Paz mid-afternoon and Methodist youth coordinator, Javier, met us and took us to our lodging. We stayed in a hotel owned by the Methodist church, and it was very nice (we even had hot water)! The church has been very hospitable and has taken good care of us.

El bus para La Paz iba a salir domingo a las 10:30 de la noche, pero al llegar al terminal supimos que había un paro (una huelga de mineros) en Puno en la carretera a la frontera y que el bus ya no iba a salir. Aparentemente los mineros hacían un bloque en la carretera y pueden hacer daño a vehículos. Oramos y logramos encontrar otro bus que si iba a salir. Confiando que Dios nos cuidaría, nos fuimos en el bus y llegamos a la frontera boliviana sin encontrar un paro! Este otro bus fue un poquito más caro que el original, pero Dios proveyó y no teníamos ningún problema en cuanto a la huelga.

Lunes 9 de Mayo

Al llegar a la frontera de Bolivia lunes por la mañana, Joanna y David (los norteamericanos) tuvieron que conseguir una visa. Supuestamente las visas requieren muchos formularios y documentos, pero los oficiales estaban muy amigables y no se preocuparon por todos los requisitos, así que consiguieron sus visas sin problemas (luego de pagar la entrada de $135).

Disfrutamos mucho del paisaje alrededor del Lago Titicaca, y incluso tuvimos que bajar del bus para una estrecha del lago en barcas mientras el bus la cruzó en un ferry! Llegamos a La Paz por la tarde y Javier, el coordinador de jóvenes para la denominación Metodista en Bolivia, nos llevó a nuestro alojamiento. Nos quedamos en un hotel de la iglesia Metodista en La Paz, y lo pasamos muy bien (incluso había agua caliente!). La iglesia es muy hospitalaria y nos ha cuidado muy bien.
