Finalizando la Cruzada / Finishing Up the Crusade

Friday June 17th
We’re back in Medellin once again!  Our bus broke down in the middle of the night and we had to wait about five hours before we were underway again in the replacement bus, but we made it Medellin yesterday afternoon.

We spent the rest of our time in Riohacha working with Angie’s church and with local schools and high schools.  We enjoyed getting to know the church members better and helping with several services at the church.  In the schools, we led activities and games and then presented messages on obedience for the younger kids and identity for the older students.  We also enjoyed working with the other YWAM team in Riohacha that does choreography and dramas.  Together we put on several presentations that included dances, dramas, songs, and lessons for the students.  It was a very gratifying week.

After finishing in Riohacha, we went to Santa Marta, a touristy city on the Caribbean coast for our remaining free day.  In Riohacha, we had met a pastor named Tilsia who invited us to stay at her church in Santa Marta.  They treated us very well and even provided several very good meals for us.  Also, God provided a couple of financial gifts that allowed us to be able to go to Santa Marta and to enjoy a few luxuries that we had been doing without for quite some time.  We got to go to a couple of beaches and got to go snorkeling at one of them.  It always amazes me to see the creativity of God in the diversity of the creatures that He created!

Today we’re working on putting together a presentation of our trip to share with the other students at the base.  Tomorrow is our graduation, and then shortly after we’ll be taking off to continue on the paths God has for each of us.  Here are our current plans:

Miguel intends to stay in Medellin and is seeking a part time job to support himself while he works with the YWAM communications ministry in Medellin called CentroCom.

Daniela plans to study psychology in either Medellin or Brazil and is praying about which direction to go.

David is returning to Oklahoma for the time being and is seeking God’s direction concerning his future.  He hopes to use his computer science training and Spanish experience to serve God by working for a Christian organization.

Elizabeth will continue to work in CentroCom in Medellin and is preparing for the first photography school that CentroCom will be offering.  She would like prayer for provision of the equipment that they need and that God would provide the students as well.

Giovanny and Joanna are in Bogota seeking the best way to continue serving God as missionaries.

Thank you so much for your support as we’ve been on this journey.  We’ve seen God work in incredible ways, and it’s been a pleasure sharing with you.  We really appreciate all of your prayers and support!

Viernes 17 de Junio

Hemos vuelto a Medellín otra vez!  Nuestro bus se dañó en plena noche y tuvimos que esperar cinco horas antes de estar de camino otra vez en el otro bus que mandó la compañía, pero llegamos a Medellín ayer por la tarde.

Pasamos el resto de nuestro tiempo en Riohacha trabajando con la iglesia de Angie y con algunos colegios.  Disfrutamos de conocer los miembros de la iglesia y de ayudar con varios cultos en la iglesia.  En los colegios, hicimos dinámicas y juegos y después presentamos mensajes sobre la obediencia para los niños y sobre la identidad para los jóvenes.  También tuvimos la oportunidad de trabajar con el otro equipo de Jucum en Riohacha que hace dramas y coreografía.  Juntos hicimos varias presentaciones que incluían bailes, obras de teatro, canciones, y enseñanzas para los estudiantes.  Fue una semana muy buena.

Después de finalizar nuestro trabajo en Riohacha, nos fuimos a Santa Marta en la costa para pasar nuestro día libre allá.  En Riohacha, habíamos conocido a una pastora que se llama Tilsia quien nos invitó a quedarnos en su iglesia en Santa Marta.  Nos atendieron super bien e incluso nos invitó a varias comidas muy buenas.  Tambíen, Dios nos proveyó un par de regalos de dinero, y por eso pudimos ir a Santa Marta y disfrutar de algunos lujos que no habíamos tenido por mucho tiempo.  Fuimos a un par de playas y conocimos la Quinta de San Pedro, también.  

Hoy estamos preparando una presentación de nuestro viaje para compartir con los otros estudiantes.  Mañana tenemos nuestra graduación, y después se va cada uno para seguir el camino que Dios tiene para nosotros.  Aquí son los planes que tenemos para el siguiente paso:

Miguel va a quedarse en Medellín y esta buscando un trabajo de medio tiempo para apoyarse mientras trabaja con el ministerio de comunicaciones, CentroCom, que Jucum tiene acá en Medellín.

Daniela va a estudiar psicología o en Medellín o en Brasil y esta buscando la dirección de Dios en cuanto a por donde ir.

David volverá a Oklahoma y está buscando la dirección de Dios para su siguiente paso.  Le gustaría usar su carrera (ingeniería de sistemas) y su experiencia con español para servir Dios por medio de trabajar con una organización cristiana.

Elizabeth continuará su trabajo con CentroCom en Medellín y esta preparando para la primera escuela de fotografía que CentroCom va a realizar.  Ella pide sus oraciones en cuanto al equipo que necesitan para la escuela y también que Dios provea estudiantes.

Giovanny y Joanna están en Bogotá y están buscando la mejor manera de seguir sirviendo al Señor como misioneros.

Les damos muchísimas gracias por su apoyo durante nuestro viaje.  Hemos visto a Dios obrar en maneras impresionantes, y ha sido un placer compartirlo todo con Uds.  De verdad les agradecemos mucho por sus oraciones y su apoyo!

Riohacha Otra Vez / In Riohacha Again

After saying good bye to the people of Kurrillamani, we returned to Riohacha on Saturday in time to attend the youth service at Angie’s church.  We introduced ourselves to the youth and they asked us to share a few songs, so David played a couple of songs and we sang together.  Afterward we had coffee and got to know some of the youth.

On Sunday and Monday morning, we went to a different rancheria.  The first morning we worked with the kids, and the second morning Daniela and Miguel shared with the adults.  A pastor who’s the leader of the community had told us he would get together a group of adults to have a service, but when we got there, the pastor was in another town and there were only three adults.  So we sang together and Daniela and Miguel shared with those who were there, and then we handed out mangos that we had collected from the tree in Angie’s yard.

We ran into the guys from the other YWAM team that’s working in Riohacha and set a date to go out to dinner last night.  We really enjoyed getting to see them again after almost two months and hearing about their work!  They’ve spent even more time in the rancherias than we have, and it sounds like they’ve had some pretty challenging experiences.

Despúes de despedirnos de la gente de Kurrillamani, regresamos a Riohacha y asistimos al culto de jóvenes en la iglesia de Angie.  Nos presentamos a los jóvenes, y nos pidieron compartir unas canciones, así que David tocó algunas canciones y cantamos juntos.  Despúes tomamos café y charlamos con algunos de los jóvenes.

El domingo y lunes por las mañanas, fuimos a otra ranchería.  La primera mañana trabajamos con los niños.  Un pastor que es el líder de la comunidad nos dijo que iba a reunir a un grupo de adultos para que hiciéramos un culto con ellos el lunes, pero cuando llegamos, el pastor estaba en otra comunidad y solamente había tres adultos.  Pero cantamos con los que estaban y Miguel y Daniela compartieron lo que habían preparado para el culto, y despúes repartimos mangos que habíamos recogido del árbol en el patio de Angie.

Nos tropezamos con algunos chicos del otro equipo de JUCUM que está trabajando en Riohacha, y decidimos salir para cenar con ellos anoche.  Disfrutamos de verlos otra vez despúes de dos meses sin verlos y de escuchar de sus experiencias!

Kurrillamani

We left on Monday around 5 pm and by 9 am the next morning (a short trip for us!), we were in Riohacha.  We’re staying with a friend of Elizabeth’s, Angie, and her mom and siblings.  They’ve been very good to us!

After a day of planning, checking out Riohacha, and resting a bit, we bought our food, packed up our gear, and headed out to our first rancheria (indigenous community), Kurrillamani.  We stayed in a simple concrete house that had just enough room to hang our hammocks.  We stayed there for three days and worked mainly with the kids and youth.  We played a lot of games and had some group activities mixed in with Bible stories and lessons.  We also had the opportunity to meet with the women of the rancheria, and Daniela shared a message with them.

There was also a Baptist church in a nearby community started by American missionaries some 25 years ago.  We went to a service there and they asked us to introduce ourselves to everyone.  Afterward we enjoyed talking with the church members and watching a movie in Wayuunaiki (their language) that they had made.  They also showed us part of the Jesus film in Wayuunaiki.  They had taken the film along with a projector and screen to the surrounding villages to show it until the project broke.

In addition to our work with the women and kids of the rancheria, some highlights of the trip include bathing in a lake, cooking our food over a wood fire, sharing our porch with the goats that slept there every night, and shooting homemade bows and arrows with the kids.  We didn’t quite so much enjoy all of the rain (almost every afternoon and evening) and mud along with the mosquitoes and gnats!

Nos fuimos el lunes a las 5 de la tarde, y a las 9 de la mañana llegamos a Riohacha (un viaje muy corto para nosotros!).  Nos estamos quedando con Angie, una amiga de Elizabeth, y su mamá y sus hermanos.  Nos han tratado muy bien!

Después de pasar un día en Riohacha planeando nuestro tiempo y descansando un poquito, compramos nuestra comida, empacamos nuestras maletas, y nos fuimos a la primer ranchería, Kurrillamani.  Allá hospedamos en una casa sencilla de cemento en que apenas cabían nuestras cuatro hamacas.  Estuvimos en Kurrillamani por tres días y trabajamos con los jóvenes y niños.  Hicimos dinámicas con ellos mezclado con historias bíblicas y enseñanzas.  También tuvimos la oportunidad de reunir con las mujeres de la ranchería, y Daniela compartió con ellos.

Había una iglesia bautista fundada por unos misioneros norteamericanos hace 25 años en una comunidad cercana.  Fuimos a un culto allá y nos pidieron presentarnos frente de la iglesia.  Después, disfrutamos de charlar con los miembros y nos invitaron a ver una película en Wayuunaiki (su lengua) que ellos habían hecho.  También nos mostraron parte de la película sobre la vida de Jesús, también en Wayuunaiki.  Ellos habían llevado la película con un proyector y una pantalla a las comunidades cercanas para mostrarla hasta que se dañó el proyector.

Además de trabajar con los de la ranchería, tuvimos algunas experiencias chéveres como bañarnos en un lago, cocinar nuestra comida sobre una fogata de leña, compartir nuestra terraza con las cabras que dormían allá, y tirando flechas con arcos caseros con los niños.  No nos gustaba tanto la lluvia (casi cada tarde y noche) y el barro además de los mosquitos y moscas!
