Vamos para la Guajira / Leaving for La Guajira

Good morning!

We finished up with the kids at the homes yesterday, and we're leaving this evening at 5 to head to La Guajira.  Our plans aren't completely set yet, but we plan on staying in Riohacha, which is the leading city of La Guajira.  From there, we will be working in surrounding towns and the countryside and may spend a night or two there.  We'll be working with indigenous people in the countryside, and we're told that the conditions are a bit harsh.  It is very hot there, and pretty remote and primitive (maybe no running water outside of the city), and lots of mosquitoes!

But we're also told that it's a beautiful area, and we trust that God is already doing some great work there among the indigenous people, and we're looking forward to joining Him there!

A few prayer requests for the trip:
Unity for the team and that we can support and encourage each other
That God equips us and enables us to do the work that He has for us there
That God does big things and changes many hearts and lives
That we can be a blessing for the people of La Guajira

We get back to Medellin around June 16th in time for our graduation ceremony on the 17th.

Thank you for your prayers!  God bless!

After a great day off yesterday, this morning we packed up and headed out to spend the rest of the week at the YWAM kids' homes here in Medellin (you can see more on the homes at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlyYEb2ZI04).  We'll be leading the devotionals for the kids and helping with any other needs they have.  None of us consider ourselves to be really great with kids, so please pray for guidance and wisdom with them.  Most of the kids are here either because their parents couldn't afford to support them or because they came to escape the violence in other parts of Colombia.  They can be a little challenging (a lot of them have rejection issues and the associated behavioral problems), but they really need love and support.  Please pray that we can be a blessing to them.

We'll be working with the kids until Sunday afternoon, and then we'll do some laundry and pack up again to leave for La Guajira on Monday morning!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Viaje a Medellin / Trip Back to Medellin

We made it back to Medellin on Tuesday afternoon after 104 hours on buses!  We were very thankful to be able to take showers and sleep in real beds again!  Just a few updates and stories from our trip back to Medellin:

We were able to leave last Thursday at around 7 am for Chile as we had hoped, and we made it to the Chilean border without any signs of a protest or road block.  The luggage scanner was broken at the Chilean customs office, so they had to manually search all luggage coming through which meant they were pretty backed up.  It took four hours before we were able to get through, but we didn’t have any problems with immigration, so thank you for praying about that.  The scenery around the border was beautiful; it was a desert-like area with snow capped mountains and crystal blue lakes but only sparse vegetation.  There were also free range llamas dotting the countryside, which was cool.

On the way from Arequipa to Lima, we stopped for lunch in a little desert town, but when we tried to leave, the bus wouldn’t start!  The driver and a few others tried to fix it for an hour or so but were unable to.  The bus company had to send another bus from Arequipa to come get us.  By the time it arrived and we transferred all of the luggage, we had waited about four and a half hours.  We were all very thankful that the problem occurred in a town and not in the middle of the desert!  While we were waiting, we met a very nice couple from Spain who were in the middle of a full year of traveling around the world.  We ended up talking to them for several hours about their adventures in South America (having their check card number stolen twice to make fraudulent purchases, encountering police corruption when they tried to report it, crossing the Bolivia/Peru border illegally in a van to get around protest road blocks, their train canceled by a landslide on the way back from Machu Picchu, etc.).

Also, Giovanny and Joanna had left a suitcase in Guayaquil so they wouldn't have so much to carry around.  When we got there, they tried to get in touch with one of the church members, Gabriel,  to get it back, but we only had an hour before our next bus was supposed to leave!  Giovanny and Gabriel left to get it, but didn't make it back in time, and the bus driver wasn't willing to wait.  They made it back to the bus terminal but hadn't made it up to the bus yet when the driver decided to leave.  So the rest of us pulled out on the bus with plans for Giovanny and Gabriel to meet us along the bus's route.  When they didn't make the first meeting place in time, they talked to the bus driver and set up to meet at a toll booth outside of town.  Unfortunately, they weren't there when we got there, and the bus driver was irritated and not willing to wait any longer.  Unsure of what to do and not wanting to leave Giovanny behind, we all got off the bus and ended up in the dark on the edge of a highway outside of Guayaquil with all of our luggage.

We walked the short distance back to the toll booth where fortunately there were a couple of policemen (apparently that area was known for robbery - someone had been shot in the head in a recent robbery attempt!) who helped us out.  One let us borrow his phone to call Gabriel who had been flying along at over 80 mph with Giovanny trying to beat the bus to a nearby town.  He had texted the bus driver to tell us not to get off, but the driver never passed on the message to us.  Gabriel was disappointed that we had gotten off (he's a taxi driver and was enjoying the challenge of beating the bus), but agreed to meet us at the terminal again.  The rest of us managed to barter passage back to the terminal on a passing bus, and we were all back together 30 minutes later.  We found another bus to continue our journey an hour later, but we couldn't get the first bus company to refund any of our money.  It was a rather difficult night for all of us.

We also wanted to let you know that Giovanny and Joanna have decided not to continue the crusade with us.  There were some differences regarding YWAM leadership and decisions made as well as some general craziness on the trip, and they decided it would be best to return to Bogota and continue their ministry there.  We wish them all the best and ask that you all be praying that God will direct them and guide them as they seek to start careers as missionaries.  They were a great asset to our team - please pray for the rest of us as we continue the crusade without them.

A Chile otra vez / To Chile Again

Well, we found out that the Peruvian protest has blocked the ports on the lake as well, so our idea of crossing the border into Pero by boat won't work.  We did find out from the bus company that our bus is scheduled to leave tomorrow morning at 7 for Chile, so we're back to the previous plan.  We're assuming it means that the block has been cleared, but we would still very much appreciate your prayers that we can get through without issues.

Thank you so much!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Todavía en Bolivia / Still in Boliva

Good morning!

We made it to the bus terminal at 6:30 this morning for our 7 o'clock departure to find that there is another protest, this time in Bolivia, that is blocking the border with Chile so our bus can't get across.  The bus company told us to wait until noon for more information.  A tv station was at the terminal filming the travelers regarding the delay, and they interviewed Giovanny, which was cool.

We called the Methodist church and they said that they had originally planned for us to be here through tomorrow anyway, so we were welcome to come back to the hotel.  We were grateful to get back to a warm place (the bus terminal is open air and it was probably around 35 degrees) and have some breakfast while we waited.

A group of Methodist missionaries (Americans) at the hotel and I had a brainstorming session, and we think we might have a solution.  It looks like our best bet is to take a bus to Copacabana on the Bolivian-Peruvian border and then to take a boat across Lake Titicaca to Puno on the Peru side.  At that point we should be past all of the road blocks and be able to continue our trip on a bus to Lima.  We're waiting for some contacts in Copacabana to get back to us about the availability and prices of the boats and to ensure that once we get to Puno, we'll be past all of the road blocks.

Please keep praying for us.  We're confident that God will work it out soon, and we're very thankful for the continuing hospitality of the church and for all of the people that He's put in our path this morning to help us.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Chile!

We spoke to the Chilean embassy in La Paz and were told that there are no problems with the highways crossing the border from Chile into Peru, so we will be going through Chile.  We leave tomorrow morning at 7 am EST for the 7 hour or so trip to Arica, Chile, and then we will continue into Peru from there.  Thank you so much for your prayers.  Please continue to pray for a safe trip for us and that we don´t have any problems getting into Chile.  We hope to make it back to Medellin on the 24th or the 25th.

God bless!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Bendiciones!
